Professor Dr. Smadar Gabrieli

Biography

Smadar Gabrieli is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia with a research focus on archaeology, particularly in the context of Cyprus during the Late Antiquity and Medieval periods. Her work addresses handmade ceramic industries, foodways, and the Mamluk period in Israel. She contributed to current archaeological discussions related to sustainability, aiming to provide historical perspectives on responsible consumption and production in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Gabrieli's PhD dissertation at the University of Sydney centered on 'Silent Witnesses: Evidence Domestic Wares 13th-19th Centuries Paphos, Cyprus, Local Economy Social Organisation', which she completed in 2006. She has held various prestigious positions including a Marie-Curie Fellowship at the University of Copenhagen and a Lady Davis Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Her research thеmatizes the interconnection between humans and their environments over a 4500-year span, exploring how historical practices influence contemporary landscapes.
