Smriti Sangwan is an Assistant Professor at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in the Department of Pharmacology. Her research focuses on understanding the molecular basis of protein quality control and the cellular pathways that ensure proteins are correctly folded, while misfolded proteins are detected and cleared. Her lab employs structural methods such as cryo-electron microscopy (cryoEM) and cryo-electron tomography (cryoET), in addition to biochemical, sequencing, and computational methodologies, to obtain molecular details of protein quality control pathways. The overarching aim is to map these systems' functions with the intention to identify new therapeutic targets for a range of diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders, cancer, and metabolic diseases. The long-term goal of her research is to leverage this information to develop precise therapeutics using rational design and computational approaches.
Administered by The Graduate School; focuses on Biomechanics, Imaging, Biomaterials, and Regenerative Medicine.
