Biography

Snejina Sonina is an Associate Professor in the Teaching Stream at the University of Toronto, specializing in French Linguistics. She has a PhD in French Linguistics from the University of Toronto and holds advanced degrees including a postgraduate degree in Romance Philology from Herzen University, and a Master of Arts in Medieval Studies from Central European University. Dr. Sonina primarily teaches courses in Phonetics and Phonology, Morphology and Syntax, as well as History of the French Language, alongside Business French. Her innovative approach integrates computer-assisted methodologies with historical, cultural, and comparative elements, enhancing students' understanding of linguistic phenomena and broadening their cultural perspectives. Dr. Sonina's current research focuses on historical-comparative studies and didactics. In 2021, she authored a new version of the Pictographic Phonetic Alphabet (PPA Pictabet) to aid in teaching pronunciation and language comparison. Her research interests include web-assisted phonetics didactics, innovative experiential pedagogy, historical comparative linguistics, lexicology, and interdisciplinary research.
