Biography

Sofia Moco is an Assistant Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specializing in the fields of Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry with a focus on metabolomics. She developed her expertise in metabolomics during her PhD studies at Wageningen University Research Center, where her research centered on the dynamics of small molecules and nutrients in biological systems using advanced analytical techniques such as mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance. Following her PhD, she held a postdoctoral position at the Institute of Molecular Systems Biology at ETH Zurich and joined Nestle Research in Lausanne, Switzerland. In 2016, she became a Team Leader and Senior Scientist in metabolomics, establishing new laboratories to conduct research aimed at improving metabolic conditions related to diabetes, obesity, and aging, with particular emphasis on mitochondrial function and bioenergetics. Since 2021, she has been an Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences at VU Amsterdam, where she develops research on drug metabolism and NAD+ metabolism, and actively teaches BSc and MSc courses. She is involved in multiple research projects funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research and the European Union, focusing on risk assessment and testing strategies for chemical safety. Additionally, she holds various editorial roles and is a committee member of Young NMC in the Netherlands, contributing to the advancement of metabolomics research.
