Biography

Sofie Nyström is an Associate Professor at Linköping University, where her research focuses on amyloid proteins and their structural heterogeneity. Her work involves the development of bioassays to understand the misfolding of proteins, which can lead to diseases in humans. A particular interest of her research lies in the relationship between viral proteins and amyloids, particularly in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Nyström’s group employs innovative protein science tools and in vivo models to investigate how virus-derived protein sequences form amyloids, as well as their impact on human proteins. Another aspect of her research explores amyloid polymorphism using recombinant proteins and biophysical techniques to determine the different structural characteristics of amyloids that can influence disease progression. This molecular understanding of amyloid structures is critical for designing new diagnostic tools and effective treatment regimens for amyloid-related diseases.
