Sofie Remijsen is an Associate Professor of Ancient History at the University of Amsterdam since 2017. Her research primarily focuses on the culture and society of the Roman Empire and Late Antiquity, with particular interests in sports, games, papyri from Egypt, and the use of calendars for timekeeping. Remijsen is currently leading a VIDI-project called 'Lived Time: Using Experiencing Time in Late-Antique Egypt.' She completed her studies in Ancient History at KULeuven in Belgium, obtaining a Master’s degree in 2006 and a PhD in 2012. After her doctoral studies, she worked as a Junior Professor in Ancient History at the University of Mannheim in Germany for four years. Her PhD research was published by Cambridge University Press in 2015, titled 'End of Greek Athletics in Late Antiquity.' In recent years, she has developed a special interest in the connection between temporal practices and identity in Late Antiquity. From 2017 to 2020, she co-coordinated the DFG-network CHRONOS and has been a principal investigator for a research project on Lived Time funded by the VIDI scheme from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). Remijsen is also a coordinator of the research group 'Cities and Settlements in the Ancient World' and a member of the editorial board of Lampas.
