Soheil Mahmoud completed his doctoral work at the University of Calgary in the area of plant biochemistry and molecular biology, focusing on the production of vertebrate proteins such as fish growth hormone in plant seeds. His work demonstrated how plants can be utilized as bioreactors to produce large quantities of high-value proteins for pharmaceutical use in aquaculture. After graduating, he joined the laboratory of Dr. Rodney Croteau at Washington State University as a postdoctoral fellow to study terpenes, which are the largest class of plant natural products, particularly in peppermint. This research led to improvements in the yield and quality of essential oil, which contains mixtures of mono- and sesquiterpenes. In 2004, he joined UBC Okanagan (formerly Okanagan University College) to initiate a research program focused on plant natural products metabolism. His group emphasizes the metabolism of isoprenoids and aromatic medicinal plants, aiming to identify and characterize structural regulatory genes involved in the biosynthesis and production of essential oils in herbal medicinal plants.
