Biography

Sojung Bahng is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist, filmmaker, and researcher. Currently, she serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Film and Media at Queen’s University in Canada, with a cross-appointment at the DAN School of Drama and Music. Her work critically explores cinematic media and digital technologies, reflecting aesthetic and narrative experiences within cultural and philosophical contexts. Sojung holds a PhD from SensiLab in the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University in Australia, where her doctoral thesis, 'Cinematic VR: A Reflexive Tool for Empathy,' received the 2020 Mollie Holman Medal. She has served as a postdoctoral fellow and instructor in the Media Production Design program at Carleton University. Bahng earned her master’s degree in Culture Technology from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and a BFA in TV & Film Production from the Korea National University of Arts. Her works have been showcased at numerous prestigious festivals and symposiums worldwide, earning international acclaim for her animated VR films and interactive projects. She has curated and directed multidisciplinary art projects, funded by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture. Bahng publishes her research in leading academic conferences and journals, and she is currently leading a SSHRC-funded project exploring the intersections of digital art and the Metaverse.
