Dr. Somnath Ghosh

Biography

Somnath Ghosh is the Michael G. Callas Chair Professor at the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering, specializing in civil and systems engineering. He directs the Computational Mechanics Research Laboratory and is the founding director of the Center for Integrated Structure-Materials Modeling Simulations, an interdisciplinary research center focused on advancing computational structure-material analysis and design. Ghosh has held roles such as co-director of NASA’s Space Technology Research Institute for Model-based Qualification Certification of Additive Manufacturing, where he leads a team developing digital twin technology. With extensive experience as a PI and director of the multi-university Center of Excellence in Integrated Materials Modeling (CEIMM), funded by the U.S. Air Force, he aims to impact the modeling of metals, composites, and multifunctional materials. His work has resulted in nearly 300 publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. Ghosh has been recognized as a fellow in several professional societies and has received numerous accolades, including the Theodore von Karman Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2025. He earned his bachelor's in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, a master's in theoretical and applied mechanics from Cornell University, and a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan.
