Dr. Sonali Walpola

Biography

Sonali Walpola is a Senior Lecturer specializing in Commercial Law and Tax Law at the Australian National University. Her research focuses on taxation law policy and the historical and contemporary mechanisms of common law that enforce promises. She actively examines the role of the High Court of Australia in the development of Australian common law. Sonali’s research has been published in esteemed journals including the Oxford University Commonwealth Law Journal and the Australian Tax Forum. She leads the ANU Tax Clinic, ensuring it fulfills its mission to assist vulnerable community members while providing a work-integrated learning experience for students. Additionally, Sonali serves as a Co-Editor for Austaxpolicy, engaging in the analysis of pressing domestic and international tax policy issues and is a member of the Higher Education Academic Board for the Tax Institute. Her work in supervision of research students is notable, and she is actively involved in various projects related to tax law policy and commercial law.
