Songqiao “Shawn” Wei is a seismologist with broad interests in Earth's mantle structures, particularly those associated with subduction zones. His recent work has focused on imaging seismic structures within the Tonga-Lau subduction system and intermediate-depth seismicity in Tonga, as well as exploring the mantle transition zone. Shawn's major interests include the methodology of seismic attenuation, and he utilizes seismic and geophysical techniques to study mantle discontinuities, subduction zones, and the presence of melt and volatiles in the mantle. He enjoys collecting fresh data through temporary seismic deployments, which he finds to be a fun aspect of field work, and he is engaged in working with a global dataset. He received his degrees from Washington University in St. Louis, earning his Ph.D. in 2016 and an M.A. in 2012, and from Peking University where he obtained his M.S. in 2010 and B.S. in 2007. Prior to his current role, Shawn worked as a Green Scholar Postdoctoral Fellow at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego from 2016 to 2017.
