Songqiao "Shawn" Wei is a seismologist with broad interests in Earth's mantle structures, particularly those associated with subduction zones. His recent work focuses on imaging seismic structures in the Tonga-Lau subduction system and investigating intermediate-depth seismicity in Tonga, as well as the mantle transition zone. He has major interests in the methodology of seismic attenuation and employs seismic and geophysical techniques to study mantle discontinuities, subduction zones, and the presence of melt and volatiles in the mantle. Shawn enjoys collecting fresh data through temporary seismic deployments, which he considers fun fieldwork, and he works with global datasets. He received his degrees from Washington University in St. Louis, earning a Ph.D. in 2016 and an M.A. in 2012, as well as a M.S. in 2010 and a B.S. in 2007 from Peking University. Prior to his current position, he worked as a Green Scholar Postdoctoral Fellow at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego from 2016 to 2017.
