Dr. Sonia Bhalotra

Biography

Sonia Bhalotra is a Professor of Economics at the University of Warwick, where she specializes in labour economics and applied econometrics. Her research interests include gender and health, particularly mental health, and the impact of labour market outcomes on institutions. Bhalotra is the Principal Investigator for a European Research Council Advanced Grant focused on economics of violence against women and has several ongoing projects related to workplace sexual harassment and domestic violence. She has played a key role in UK Economic and Social Research Council funded initiatives addressing mental health and wellbeing, consolidating her expertise in applied microeconomics. In addition to her current work, she conducts experiments utilizing policy interventions embedded within administrative data sets, focusing on human capital, family dynamics including women's roles in the workplace, child development, and political economy. Throughout her career, Bhalotra has held numerous prestigious academic and advisory positions, collaborating across disciplines such as Law, Public Health, Psychology, and Political Science. Her academic journey is marked by strong contributions to the literature on economic policy and social equity.
