Dr. Sonia Caprio

Biography

Sonia Caprio, MD, is a prominent figure in the field of Pediatric Endocrinology with a focus on childhood obesity and related conditions. For over 25 years, Dr. Caprio has conducted research investigating the pathophysiology of Type 2 diabetes (T2D) in obese youth. Her work has significantly contributed to understanding insulin resistance and beta-cell dysfunction, specifically during the early stages of T2D, such as Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT). She has led pioneering studies that have highlighted the urgent obesity crisis facing children and has been instrumental in the funding and execution of major clinical trials including the RISE studies. Recognized for her contributions, Dr. Caprio received the Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award from the American Diabetes Association in 2008 and the Distinguished Leader in Insulin Resistance Award in 2015. Her recent work includes assembling large, multiethnic cohorts for the Pathogenesis of Youth Onset Diabetes study and exploring the roles of insulin resistance and beta-cell dysfunction in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD).
