Sonia Ferdous Hoque is an environmental social scientist and Senior Research Associate at the Water Security Society. She is part of the leadership team for the REACH Programme, a 100 million initiative aimed at improving water security through innovative service delivery models in schools and healthcare facilities in Bangladesh. Sonia's research focuses on understanding the distribution of water risks related to drinking water services in rural areas and small towns across Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and Kenya, as well as examining urban river pollution linked to the global fashion industry. By applying theories of human-environment interactions, her work investigates socio-spatial inequalities in water use behavior and decision-making through methods like water diaries and intra-household surveys. Currently, she co-leads the 'Water Society Interactions Sustainable Development' module and the 'Research Design Skills' module for the MSc Water Science program, as well as the 'Water Inequalities, Sustainability Enterprise' module for the MSc Sustainability, Enterprise and Environment at the Smith School of Enterprise and Environment. Additionally, she serves as Co-Chair of the Oxford Water Network. Sonia completed her PhD research at the University of Leeds in 2016, which examined differential livelihood adaptation to social-ecological changes in coastal Bangladesh. She holds an MSc in Environmental Management from the National University of Singapore, completed in 2011, and a BSc in Environmental Science from North South University in Dhaka, earned in 2009.
