Biography

Sonia Mayoral is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at Brown University. She is a cellular neuroscientist who is interested in studying cell-cell interactions in the brain, with a focus on the development and function of oligodendrocytes. These specialized glial cells are responsible for wrapping myelin around neurons, which is crucial for proper neuronal function. Her research aims to understand the complex interactions between cells in multicellular organisms, specifically how these interactions contribute to essential brain functions. Mayoral's work seeks to unravel the mechanisms by which oligodendrocytes wrap axons and the roles that different cell types play in this process. She completed her PhD in 2012 and has undergone extensive postdoctoral training at UCSF from 2012 to 2021, where she further developed her expertise in neuroscience. Currently, she is involved in teaching courses related to non-neuronal brain functions while leading her own laboratory efforts at Brown University.
