Biography

Sonia McCallum is a research fellow at the Centre for Mental Health Research, National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, at the Australian National University. Her research focuses on understanding and improving mental health in children, youth, and parents, with a particular emphasis on ensuring that help is sought when needed. Currently, she is leading the evaluation of a new intervention designed to assist parents in recognizing and responding to mental health problems, including anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and psychological distress in children. Sonia holds a PhD, a Graduate Certificate in Primary Health Care, a Bachelor of Health Science with Honours, and a Bachelor of Science. Her research interests include the monitoring and evaluation of mental health in children and youth, help-seeking behavior, mental health literacy, stigma, depression, and anxiety disorders. She is also a registered supervisor for research students, actively supervising various topics within her area of expertise.
