Sonia Tamar Seeman is an Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology in the Butler School of Music’s musicology ethnomusicology division. She holds active affiliations with the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Center for Women and Gender Studies, and the Center for Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies. She specializes in the music of the Middle East and Southeastern Europe, having worked with Romani professional musicians since the mid-1980s. Sonia is the founder and director of UT’s Middle Eastern Ensemble, “Bereket”, which brings together students, faculty, staff, and community members to study and perform the regional, court, religious, and popular music of diasporic communities. Her recent publications include works on representation and identity in music and have appeared with prestigious publishers such as Oxford University Press and Continuum. She serves as the Bachelor of Arts Program Coordinator and is the advisor for UT’s Fulbright Program.
