Dr. Sonia Zakrzewski

Biography

Sonia Zakrzewski is a bioarchaeologist focusing on human skeletons. Her research interests center around biological anthropology, race, human diversity and variability, migration, mobility, diet, identity, disease, and religious practices within past populations. Initially focused on human dispersals out of Egypt, her work has expanded to include the intersection of funerary archaeology and bodily identity within both Predynastic and Early Dynastic Egypt. She has developed collaborations that leverage computed tomography (CT) to gain insights into the lives of ancient populations, including studies on skeletal collections that have documented the earliest cases of leprosy in the UK. Sonia's ongoing research examines the bodily expressions of identity and mobility in ancient Egypt, recognizing the impact of religion, climate change, and violence. She is actively engaged in projects that explore the relationship between physical impairment and disAbility within bioarchaeology and palaeopathology, reflecting a commitment to understanding human experiences through a diverse lens. Additionally, Sonia has held various roles in professional organizations, including serving as a reviewer for academic journals and holding leadership positions within societies focused on biological anthropology.
