Sonja Vermeren undertook her PhD training in biochemistry at the University of Cambridge and completed her post-doctoral training in cell biology at the MRC Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology in London and the Babraham Institute in Cambridge. She established her own laboratory at the Babraham Institute focusing on neutrophils and endothelial cells, before moving to the Centre for Inflammation Research at the University of Edinburgh in 2013, where she currently serves as a Reader. Her primary research interest lies in the molecular control of neutrophil pro- and anti-inflammatory functions and their dysregulation in disease. Neutrophils are the most abundant circulating leukocytes in humans and play a critical role in immune responses to infections. Vermeren is particularly interested in the cross-talk between neutrophils and the endothelium, which regulates transendothelial migration and inflammation-associated leakage. Her work addresses important questions about how dysregulated neutrophils promote diseases like autoimmune disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis and liver cirrhosis. She employs a combination of experimental models to investigate these intricate mechanisms.
