Biography

Sonny Astani is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Southern California. He received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 1970. His academic journey also includes earning a Master’s degree from Utah State University in 1967 and a Bachelor’s degree from National Taiwan University in 1962. Over his distinguished career, he has made significant contributions to the field of civil engineering, particularly in hydraulics, water resources engineering, and coastal engineering. His research has been recognized with several awards, including the 2016 Environmental Water Resources Institute Paper Award and the 2011 AWWA (American Water Works Association) Paper Award. In 1995, he received the Excellent Teaching Award from the USC School of Engineering/TRW Corporation. He has also been honored by the National Chi-Epsilon Honor Society and the USC Civil Engineering Alumni Association for his excellence in teaching. Professor Astani has engaged in various research initiatives supported by esteemed organizations such as the National Science Foundation.
