Sonya Lifschitz is a Ukrainian-Australian performer, pedagogue, researcher, and collaborator of international repute. Her creative practice encompasses solo and chamber-music performance, curating, producing, and presenting new work, as well as directing cross-disciplinary multimedia collaborations. With critically acclaimed solo debuts at renowned venues such as the Barbican Centre in London and De Doelen in Rotterdam, her performances have also been featured in prestigious concerts across New York and various Australian festivals. Actively engaged in musical advocacy, she has commissioned and premiered numerous large-scale works by acclaimed composers. A passionate collaborator, Sonya has worked with leading performers and music ensembles in Australia, debuting with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the age of 18. Sonya holds a PhD in creative practice from the University of Melbourne and is currently a Lecturer and Convenor of Creative Practice at the University of New South Wales. Her research interests focus on creating collaborative, multi-art-form performances with social and artistic outcomes, challenging traditional composer-performer structures in contemporary performance practice. Sonya is also committed to musical pedagogy, working on innovative methodologies to assist pianists in developing healthy playing techniques.
