Biography

Soo Young Rieh is the Interim Dean and Brooke E. Sheldon Professor at the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research areas include human information behavior, search learning, supporting creativity in search, information credibility, and exploring applications of artificial intelligence in library settings. Her prior research focused on conceptualizing the searching learning process and evaluating human learning in web searching. Currently, her studies revolve around fostering critical thinking and creativity in the search process, with a particular emphasis on the intersection of information search strategies and idea generation. Rieh is a principal investigator for the Training Future Faculty Library and data-driven education research project, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Her contributions to research have garnered her recognition including several awards such as the ASIS&T Outstanding Contributions Information Behavior Research Award in 2019 and the CHIIR Paper Award in 2023. She has been actively engaged in scholarly communities serving as the Director-at-Large of the Board at the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) and as a member of the ACM SIGIR Conference on Human Information Interaction and Retrieval (CHIIR) Steering Committee. Rieh holds significant editorial positions including Associate Editor of the journal Information Learning Sciences and member of the Editorial Boards of several reputable journals.
