Dr. Sophia Ra

Biography

Sophia Ra is an Associate Lecturer in the Translation Interpreting Program, Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University. She completed her Doctor of Philosophy in interpreting studies at the University of New South Wales, where her thesis focused on the communication challenges faced by healthcare interpreters in a multicultural society. Her research interests encompass healthcare interpreting, intercultural communication, and interpreter training. In addition to her academic role, she is a professional translator, interpreter, and subtitler, proficient in English and Korean, providing interpreting services both onsite and remotely. Sophia is actively involved in various projects, including training programs for translators and interpreters, and consultancy work aimed at enhancing communication access for individuals with communication support needs. Throughout her career, she has presented at several conferences, sharing insights on the challenges and ethical considerations in intercultural communication within healthcare settings.
