Dr. Sophia Smith

Biography

Sophia Kustas Smith is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at Duke University, where she has been a member of the faculty since 2020. She earned her Ph.D. and M.S.W. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work. Her research focuses on improving the quality of cancer care, particularly in the domains of post-treatment survivorship and palliative care, with a primary emphasis on leveraging technology to deliver behavioral health interventions within the community. She actively integrates clinical cancer care and research to build a scientific foundation for innovation in patient support and resources. Smith has been associated with the Duke Cancer Institute since 2013 and has contributed to various publications regarding digital health approaches for managing PTSD symptoms among cancer survivors and their caregivers. Her work aims to enhance patient outcomes through evidence-based interventions and training programs that address social determinants of health.
