Dr. Sophie D Amours

Biography

Sophie D'Amours is the first female rector of Laval University in Quebec and the 26th person to hold this position, elected in 2017 and re-elected for a mandate in 2022. She has a background in mechanical engineering and holds a Master's degree in Business Administration from Laval University and a PhD in Engineering Mathematics from École Polytechnique de Montréal. A professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Laval University since 1995, she served as Vice-Rector for Research and Creation from 2012 to 2015. D'Amours has significant experience in higher education, research, and university management on both national and international levels. Her career includes substantial contributions to research in business engineering and planning, particularly in the forestry sector. She has held a Canada Research Chair and an Industrial Research Chair from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and has led national and international initiatives in her field. D'Amours has been a visiting professor in several countries and is committed to addressing societal challenges and enhancing people's well-being through educational innovation and research partnerships. She is a proactive advocate for teamwork, efficiency, and collaborative networking.
