Biography

Sophie M. Lavoie conducts research in women's writing and social change, with a particular focus on contemporary Nicaragua and the Sandinista era (1970-1990). Her interests include revolutionary movements in Central America and the Caribbean, especially the roles of women in these contexts. Dr. Lavoie's current research project explores the connection between women's writing, empowerment, and revolutionary action during the Sandinista period in Nicaragua. She holds several roles within her university, including being an associate faculty member in the International Development Studies program, Gender and Women's Studies program, and Film Studies Program at the University of New Brunswick. In addition to her academic role, she serves as the Director of the Creative Registry for the Canadian Association of Hispanists and has held positions such as past President of the Association of Hispanists of the Atlantic Provinces and Treasurer of the Society for Literary Criticism of Spanish American Women Writers. Previously, Dr. Lavoie taught in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Laurentian University and the Department of Spanish at Dalhousie University. Her contributions to numerous anthologies and journals highlight her expertise in issues related to Latin American literature, cultural studies, and feminist theory. Her extensive publication record underscores her commitment to advancing knowledge in her field.
