Biography

Sophie Norris is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Victoria. Her academic focus lies in Quaternary geomorphology, geochronology, ice sheet dynamics, glacial erosion, and glacial lake outburst floods. She leads the Geomorphology Chronology Research (GCR) lab, which is dedicated to understanding past glacier ice sheet responses to global climatic changes during the Quaternary period, spanning the last 2.6 million years. Through a combination of laboratory and analytical approaches alongside computer modeling tools, her research seeks to quantify the timing and rate of landscape changes in terrestrial cryosphere environments. Her ongoing projects focus on three principal themes: reconstructing the evolution of the North American Ice Sheet Complex, modeling glacial lake outburst floods, and quantifying glacial erosion processes and rates, which aim to inform predictions of future glacial erosion rates. In addition to her research, she teaches various courses including Introduction to Climatology and Hydrology, Introduction to Geomorphology, and Advanced Topics in Geography.
