Biography

Professor Sophie Page joined UCL History as a permanent lecturer in 2002 after studying at the Warburg Institute and UCL Cambridge. Her research focuses on European medieval magic and astrology, particularly in relation to religion, natural philosophy, and cosmology. She has a keen interest in the imagery of medieval magic, especially diagrams and the historical context of animals within this field. Professor Page has published works that include 'Magic Cloister: Pious Motives, Illicit Interests, Occult Approaches Medieval Universe' (2013) and has edited collections such as 'Unorthodox Imagination in Late Medieval Britain' (2011) and others on Medieval Magic. She is currently working on a book titled 'Nature Magic in Medieval Europe' and curated the exhibition 'Spellbound: Magic, Ritual and Witchcraft' at the Ashmolean Museum in 2018-2019. Her teaching spans multiple topics, including the Medieval Universe and the intersection of magic, science, and witchcraft in late Medieval Europe. She actively supervises PhD students focusing on medieval cultural and intellectual history, particularly in areas related to occult sciences and visual culture.
