Dr. Sophie Salvo

Biography

Sophie Salvo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Chicago. She specializes in German literature, culture, and feminist gender studies, particularly during the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries. Her research investigates the interplay of concepts of sex and gender within German literature and intellectual history, focusing on how these themes manifest in contemporary political novels. Salvo authored "Articulating Difference: Sex and Language in the German Nineteenth Century," a study examining how ideas about sexual difference, shaped by philosophical and linguistic debates, influenced literary forms and rhetoric involving gender. In addition to her book, she has published several articles that dissect the gendered dimensions of language and literature, demonstrating how male-centric narratives have historically marginalized women's contributions to German letters. Salvo co-runs the German Studies Scholarly Seminar at the Newberry Library, where she collaborates with students on topics such as sexuality, modernism, and the representation of Holocaust narratives in German history textbooks. Her ongoing projects include an edited volume titled 'Reinvention of Patriarchy' and an exploration of contemporary political literature in the twenty-first century.
