Biography

Sophie Vlacos is a Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Theory at the University of Glasgow's School of Critical Studies. She obtained her PhD in philosophy from Cardiff University in 2011 and has been with the University of Glasgow since 2012. Vlacos teaches a variety of courses in English Literature, focusing primarily on post-1900 literature, and supervises doctoral theses on contemporary authors and theorists. In 2014, she published a monograph titled "Ricoeur, Literature Imagination" with Bloomsbury, which explores Paul Ricoeur's philosophy of language and its historical impact on modern literary theory. Her research interests span contemporary literature, Modernism, continental philosophy, hermeneutics, and contemporary critical theory. She has organized the 'Theory Now' conference, held at Glasgow in March 2019, and has had her work featured in journals such as Symbiosis. Vlacos is also involved in research clusters focused on Critical Theory and has received a Carnegie Research Incentive Grant for her study on Gesture in German Expressionism. She is interested in supervising theses related to literary studies from the late 19th century onwards, particularly those with a strong philosophical and theoretical basis.
