Biography

Sophie Wilkinson is a wildfire ecosystem scientist focused on developing ecosystem management strategies to reduce the negative impacts of fire on ecosystems and society. She became an Assistant Professor in the School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University in 2023. Sophie applies an interdisciplinary approach to her research, incorporating field assessments, experimental fires, GIS, and ecological modeling to understand the resilience of ecosystems and communities to wildfire. Her current research includes understanding patterns of wildfire severity and identifying ecological tipping points in high-severity fires in black spruce lowlands and mountain pine beetle-attacked forests in western Canada. She works closely with the Canadian Forestry Service and resource land managers to translate academic research findings into actionable management solutions, both in Canada and internationally, while developing a new fuel moisture index for the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System.
