Dr. Sophie Witt

Biography

Sophie Witt is a Professor of Literary Studies at the University of Hamburg, leading the Institute for Liberal Arts & Sciences. Her research spans the literatures of the late 18th century to the present, focusing particularly on 'around 1800', classical modernism, and literature after 1945. She specializes in British and American literature, particularly 'around 1900', and in theater history and theory. Her academic pursuits also include exploring intersections of literature and medicine through Medical Humanities, cultural methodology, and the role of literature in ethics. Since 2024, she has been the managing director of the Institute for Liberal Arts & Sciences and deputy speaker in the philosophy department. Witt completed her habilitation at the University of Zurich in 2023 and has held various prestigious positions including as a professor at the University of Zurich and visiting scholar roles at institutions such as Yale University. Notable publications include works on psychosomatics and theater, contributing to understanding literature’s role in cultural and medical contexts.
