Dr. Sophus Reinert

Biography

Professor Sophus Reinert studies the histories of capitalism, globalization, and political economy, particularly in relation to emerging markets and the historical role played by governments in economic development. He is the author of "Translating Empire: Emulation and the Origins of Political Economy," published by Harvard University Press in 2011. His work has earned him several prestigious awards, including the 2012 Spengler Prize, EAEPE-Myrdal Prize, and the George L. Mosse Prize from the American Historical Association. He has also edited academic volumes on the history of political economy including "Academy Fisticuffs: Political Economy and Commercial Society in Enlightenment Italy," released in summer 2018. His ongoing research includes case-writing on emerging markets, particularly in Africa and Asia, and he is currently writing books addressing the nature of sovereign wealth funds and theorizing Renaissance business practices. Professor Reinert holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of Cambridge as well as an M.Phil. in political thought and intellectual history, and he completed his undergraduate studies in history at Cornell University.
