Dr. Søren Sørensen

Biography

Søren Møller Sørensen is an accomplished musicologist, currently serving as an Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen. His research interests span contemporary music, sound art, and the philosophy of music, focusing particularly on Scandinavian and German influences since the 1980s. His PhD thesis emphasized the concept of performativity in music, which has guided much of his subsequent work. He has engaged deeply with the history of music theory and aesthetics, examining the materiality of sound through critical readings of diverse sources and musical histories. Sørensen is particularly invested in contemporary Arabic music culture, investigating how socio-institutional frameworks and philosophical discourses shape music within this context, especially in the Arabic-speaking Middle East. His recent work aims to bridge the gaps in music historiography, exploring significant genres of classical Arabic music and their political implications, particularly in relation to the Egyptian revolution of 2011.
