Biography

Sos Eltis is a Tutorial Fellow at Brasenose College, University of Oxford, specializing in English Theatre Studies. Eltis's scholarly contributions include works such as 'Revising Wilde: Society Subversion Plays Oscar Wilde,' where she discusses Wilde's revisions and challenges the traditional views of him as a mere dilettante, instead portraying him as a serious philosopher and social critic. In her research, she investigates the intersections of sexuality and theatre, notably through her book 'Acts Desire: Women Sex Stage, 1800-1930,' which explores the representation of illicit sexuality on stage. This study draws extensively from the Lord Chamberlain's Plays archive and examines how contemporary societal and legal debates influenced the treatment of these themes in dramatic literature. Eltis has also begun a project focusing on theatrical representations of labor and the stage's role in the political discourse surrounding working conditions in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Her academic interests extend to Victorian and modern literature spanning from 1830 to the present day. Eltis has held several influential roles within the English Faculty at Oxford, including Chair and Member of the English Faculty Board, and has been actively involved in drama and performance seminars.
