Biography

Sotira Z. Yiacoumi is a Professor Emerita in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She earned her Diploma in Engineering from Aristotle University in Greece in 1985, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Syracuse University in 1987 and 1992, respectively. After receiving her Ph.D., she joined the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Georgia Tech as an Assistant Professor, later becoming an Associate Professor in 1997. Her research focuses on colloidal interfacial phenomena and environmental energy systems, particularly in areas such as sorption phenomena and the influence of molecular techniques on environmental processes. Yiacoumi co-authored the influential book 'Kinetics of Metal Ion Adsorption from Aqueous Solutions: Models, Algorithms, Applications' in 1997, and received the National Science Foundation Career Award for her work on particle flocculation kinetics. She was also the chair of the organizing committee for the 77th American Chemical Society Colloid Surface Science Symposium held at Georgia Tech in June 2003. Recently, she has been recognized for her contributions to teaching and research in her field.
