Biography

Soumya Sarkar is a Lecturer at the University of Southampton in the School of Electronics and Computer Science, where he leads interdisciplinary research focusing on the development of nanoelectronic and photonic devices for applications in high-performance computing, sustainable AI hardware, and quantum technologies. He co-organized the 2D TMDs 2025 meeting in Cambridge, UK. Soumya moved to the UK in 2021 after working as a postdoctoral researcher in the 2D Materials Devices group at the University of Cambridge, where he researched metal contacts in 2D spintronic and ferroelectric-based devices. Prior to this, he was a research fellow at the National University of Singapore (2019-2021), focusing on defect-based light emitters in hexagonal boron nitride. He obtained his Ph.D. from the National University of Singapore (2015-2018), researching the optical properties of atomically thin semiconductors and oxide thin films under the NGS fellowship in interdisciplinary studies. His research has been recognized through invited seminars, and he has received awards at international conferences such as the MRS Fall Meeting in the USA, ICANS30 in the UK, and ICLED in Singapore. In Cambridge, he was affiliated with Trinity College and organized popular science outreach initiatives for postdocs.
