Biography

Souvik Lal Chakraborty is a Lecturer in Human Geography at Monash University and serves as the Course Director of the Master of International Development Practice. He completed his Ph.D. in Human Geography at Monash University where his doctoral research analyzed the developmental pathways in India that currently affect the cultural identities of marginalized tribal communities. In July 2023, he was honored with the Award for Dissertation Excellence from the Institute of Australian Geographers. Prior to his doctoral studies, Souvik earned a Master’s degree in Democratic Governance and Civil Society from the University of Osnabrück in Germany, supported by a DAAD Public Policy and Good Governance scholarship. His research and teaching focus on nature-society relations, with specific interests in the politics of mining resource extraction, indigenous geographies, political ecology, contentious politics, and critical development studies. His teaching courses include Understanding Development: Discourse, Practice and Power and Political Ecology: Critical Explanations of Socio-Environmental Problems, among others.
