Biography

Soyini Madison is a Professor Emerita at Northwestern University. She completed her PhD in 1989 at the same institution and has lived and worked in Ghana. As a Senior Fulbright Scholar, she conducted field research on the interconnections of traditional religion, political economy, and indigenous performance tactics. Her recent publications include 'Acts of Activism: Human Rights and Radical Performance' (2010), and she has co-edited several volumes, including the 'Sage Handbook of Performance Studies' (2006). Madison has received numerous teaching awards, including the Tanner University Award for Outstanding Inspirational Teaching. Her recent performances have adapted ethnographic work, including 'Story Tell', which reflects oral histories of laborers, and 'Mandela, Land, People', which is based on the life work of Nelson Mandela. She has also created a multi-media performance titled 'Water Rites', focused on the struggle for clean and accessible water as a human right.
