Biography

Spencer Gibson graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in Clinical Biochemistry in 1997, subsequently completing a pre-doctoral fellowship at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He then pursued a post-doctoral fellowship at the National Jewish Medical Research Center in Denver, Colorado. In 1999, he became an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba, where he contributed to the creation and expansion of the Manitoba Tumor Bank. Dr. Gibson served as Director of the CancerCare Manitoba Research Institute from 2012 to 2015, where he developed infrastructure for translational research that brought together multidisciplinary researchers to impact cancer treatment. With 140 peer-reviewed publications, his work focuses on understanding cell death responses to stress therapies, securing over 20 million dollars in funding for research that has influenced clinical practices in Manitoba. In 2021, he became the inaugural Dianne Irving Kipnes Endowed Chair for Lymphatic Disorders at the University of Alberta's Department of Oncology. His research investigates the lymphatic system and its role in various diseases, especially chronic lymphocytic leukemia and lymphedema, aiming to uncover mechanisms of disease progression and treatment resistance. His collaborative initiatives build networks focused on advancing the understanding and treatment of these conditions across Canada.
