Biography

Spyros has held teaching and research positions in the United Kingdom, Sweden, and various European countries, including the London School of Economics and Political Science and Lund University. His work addresses the intersection of societal insecurity, identity, and collective action while engaging with Turkish politics and society, nationalism and populism in Europe and the Middle East, as well as the political identities of European Muslims. He has published widely, including the upcoming book 'Turkey, Geopolitics and the Age of Populism' (Routledge, 2026), and has contributed to several edited volumes and peer-reviewed articles. Spyros has served as the editor of the Journal of Contemporary European Studies and as the reviews editor for Mediterranean Politics, and he is a founding editor of the international initiative #RethinkingPopulism. As an active public scholar, he provides analysis to international media outlets and participates in policy discussions. Spyros is currently accepting MA students interested in topics such as collective action, nationalism, and the cultural-political dimensions of Islam in the West, with a particular focus on the historical relations and cultural politics of Muslim communities in Europe and North America, as well as conflict in the Middle East and Southeastern Europe.
