Dr. Stacy Denton

Biography

Stacy Denton is an Associate Professor in the Teaching Stream at the University of Waterloo, specializing in English Language and Literature. With a PhD in Interdisciplinary Humanities from Concordia University, Denton's academic journey began with a BA in English Literature from SUNY Potsdam and an MA in English from SUNY Albany. Her research focuses on the representations of class, rurality, and race, particularly in the context of literature and film, examining how these elements reflect and challenge contemporary societal issues. She employs an interdisciplinary framework that integrates literature, film, journalism, and social sciences to analyze the complexities of representation during post-World War II, using her insights to engage students at various academic levels. Over the past decade, she has created inclusive classrooms that encourage students from diverse disciplines to voice their interpretations of multifaceted texts. Apart from her pedagogical work, Denton has contributed to numerous publications, including entries in literary encyclopedias and critiques of contemporary cinema. Her current research project explores the works of artist-writer Rosalyn Drexler, focusing on how her series of paintings address themes of violence and alienation in a rapidly changing postwar context. Denton also investigates the role of first-year programs in fostering student empowerment within an interdisciplinary classroom framework.
