Biography

Staffan Appelgren is an Associate Professor in Social Anthropology at the University of Gothenburg, holding a PhD in Social Anthropology. His research primarily focuses on sustainability, consumption, heritage, design, architecture, circular economy, material culture, tourism, and globalization. In recent years, he has investigated the emerging forms of circulation and preservation of everyday material culture in consumer society, with a particular emphasis on second-hand goods, reuse, and redesign. His project, "Re:heritage – Circulation Marketization of Things History," funded by the Swedish Research Council, examines grassroots initiatives aimed at preserving items through reuse. He is currently the principal investigator for another project, “Staying (with) Things: Alternatives to Circular Living Consumption,” which also receives funding from the Swedish Research Council, focusing on material circulation and forming long-lasting relationships with belongings. With extensive teaching experience in Social Anthropology, Global Studies, and related fields, he has developed and coordinated undergraduate and doctoral courses and supervised numerous theses. His commitment to pedagogy and quality in education is evident from his roles as Director of Studies.
