Stan Allen is a Design Critic in Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He has had a parallel career as an educator, architect, and writer. His independent practice, SAA/Stan Allen Architect, established in 1991, focuses on realized buildings and urban projects across the United States, South America, and Asia. Allen was one of twelve architects selected to represent the United States at the American Pavilion in the XV Venice Biennale in 2016. His architectural work has been published in several significant texts, including 'Points + Lines: Diagrams Projects City' and 'Practice: Architecture, Technique Representation'. He edited the volume 'Landform Building: Architecture’s New Terrain', published by Lars Müller in 2011, and authored 'Situated Objects', published by Park Books in 2021. In recognition of his contributions to the field, Allen received the John Q. Hejduk Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2009. He was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows in 2011 and inducted into the National Academy of Design in 2012. A retrospective exhibition titled 'Building Writing' was showcased at the Princeton School of Architecture in the spring of 2025, and will travel to the Chicago Architecture Biennial in September.
