Biography

Stan Bentvelsen is a Professor at the University of Amsterdam, where he specializes in Collider Physics and High Energy Physics. He graduated in Theoretical Physics from the University of Amsterdam in 1989, with a focus on cosmological scalar fields. Following his graduation, he completed his doctorate at the same institution in 1994, with a thesis on measuring the proton structure function using the ZEUS detector at HERA, awarded cum laude. Bentvelsen then worked as a fellow and later a staff member at CERN in Geneva, where he analyzed electron-positron collisions at the LEP accelerator from 1994 to 2000. He joined FOM - Nikhef as a senior researcher from 2000 to 2005, working on preparations for the Atlas experiment at the LHC. Since 2005, he has been a professor at the University of Amsterdam and is responsible for the FOM program exploring new phenomena at the highest energy frontiers. He is also the director of the Institute for High Energy Physics at FNWI. Bentvelsen teaches Special Relativity and Elementary Particle Physics to Bachelor students, and has served in various roles including convenor of the top-quark physics group in Atlas and as a member of the KNAW CERN Contact Committee.
