Biography

Stan Geertman is a Professor of Planning Support Science at Utrecht University. He has published widely in both national and international journals and authored a range of editorial books. He serves on the editorial boards of various international peer-reviewed journals, including Computers, Environment and Urban Systems (CEUS), and has played significant roles in international conference organizations such as EGIS, JECC, AGILE, and DDSS. From 2011 to 2021, he was the Chair of the International Board of Directors for CUPUM (Computational Urban Planning and Urban Management). His current research interests include Planning Decision Support Systems, Smart Cities, Smart Governance, socio-spatial analysis, and sustainable urbanization, focusing on both Chinese and Western contexts. Additionally, he explores the implications of planning theory and the role of Artificial Intelligence in Planning Support. He delivered his farewell lecture in June 2021 as part of a major international CUPUM conference in Helsinki, reflecting on the significance of Planning Support Science in achieving smarter planning for sustainable urban futures.
