Biography

Stan Yamashiro holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California. He began his academic career as an Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering at USC from 1971 to 1974. His teaching expertise includes bio-instrumentation, medical electronics, and respiratory physiology, while his research focuses on peripheral circulation and cardiopulmonary regulation. He achieved the rank of Associate Professor in Biomedical Electrical Engineering, where he continued teaching and expanded his research into dynamics of cardiopulmonary regulation from 1974 to 1982. Since 1982, he has served as a Professor in the same department. His ongoing research involves the development of mathematical models for training on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenators (ECMO). He has made significant contributions to the understanding of breathing patterns and respiratory control during exercise, revealing important physiological insights about lung volume and diaphragm function. His work utilizes computer simulation and observational studies, including animal experiments, to explore optimization in respiratory control. Yamashiro is also interested in magnetocardiography for studying cardiac conduction system dynamics during varying physiological states. His innovative research methodologies include the application of geostatistical theory to enhance signal interpretation in complex cardiac studies.
