Stan M. Yamashiro is a Professor in the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Southern California. He earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from USC in 1970 and subsequently served as an Assistant Professor from 1971-1974, focusing on bio-instrumentation, medical electronics, and respiratory physiology. His research interests include peripheral circulation and mathematical models for cardiopulmonary regulation. From 1974 to 1982, he was an Associate Professor, teaching signal processing and laboratory computer applications while continuing his work in cardiopulmonary regulation. Since 1982, he has been a full Professor, teaching courses in cardiovascular pulmonary physiology. His recent research endeavors include developing mathematical models to enhance gas exchange and studying the mechanics of respiratory control during exercise. His published work has significantly contributed to understanding diaphragmatic function and ventilatory drive during physical activity. In addition to his academic roles, he is highly involved in exploring magnetocardiography's potential in cardiac conduction studies and is known for his innovative numerical methodologies in optimizing breathing patterns.
