Biography

Stanley Brul is a trained biochemist who graduated 'cum laude' in 1986 and obtained his PhD at AMC Amsterdam in 1991. He was a post-doctoral fellow at Nijmegen University focusing on Microbiology and Evolutionary Biology and received the NWO (NATO) TALENT grant. In 1994, he moved to Unilever in R&D roles, serving as a program manager and later as an endowed chair in Industrial Molecular Microbiology. In 2002, he became a full professor at the University of Amsterdam in Molecular Biology & Microbial Food Safety. He has held various administrative and academic roles within the university, including director of the College of Life Sciences. His research interests include bacterial spore formers, gut microbiome occurrence, spore germination and outgrowth physiology, and antimicrobial resistance. He has published around 180 papers and currently collaborates on studies involving Bacillus subtilis and Clostridium difficile. Stanley is a member of the Dutch National Association Biologists and serves on the Biology Council, actively participating in initiatives to promote the biological sciences.
